MY MOMENTARY PERCEPTION OF THE WONDER AND BEAUTY TO BE ALIVE IN THE WORLD
Curatorial Statement by John Marcucci, Ph.D.
This third iteration of paintings by Gisa Elwazir captures an exponential increase in the expression of her visions on organic abstraction. The saturated colors are the first allure of vibrancy. And then we are brought into the compositions of place and movement.
Gisa Elwazir begins her process using a technique from her mentor Max Ernst called decalcomania. It is a way of creating a texture from paint pressed between glass plates, and the separation of the plates gives a texture to the paint, which is then applied to the paper. It is from this beginning that the artist takes her inspiration and creates her vision.
These paintings are phantasmagorical. Especially when we take in the entire series to date, the principal motifs of small shapes coalescing into larger shapes, the layers of color and transparency, and the tension of contrasts and movement generate a world ready for continuous discovery.
Four of the paintings among the nine in the exhibition have her motif of floating gossamer panels. These transparent panels provide an ephemeral element that creates shadow to the colors and forms below. It is not light in the manner of light and dark, as much as color layered in contrasting forms that gives movement and tension to the paintings.
Per the artist’s request, Philip Glass’s music, The Hours is played in the gallery during viewing. The titles of the works are from Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry. Together, the art, music and poetry form an encounter with atmospheric memories that reveal themselves in My Momentary Perception of the Wonder and Beauty to be Alive in the World.
