DALLAS, Texas (October 27, 2008)---The work of three outstanding women artists: Gisa Elwazir, Elisabeth Schalij and Silvia Thornton, grace Haley-Henman Gallery from November 12, 2008 to January 17, 2009. The exhibition of their work is aptly entitled, The Three Graces. The opening reception with the artists was held on Saturday, November 15.
Gisa Elwazir is an exceptional artist, winning many prestigious awards in Texas and internationally. She is a master of the medium of gouache. She intertwines symbols and colors in complex compositions that reveal stories about the human condition. The central figures in most of her work are women who reveal those moments in life that shape us. Gisa’s gift of creating multi-layered visual stories will be represented by nine of her most recent paintings, one of which is entitled, The Three Graces. Born in Germany and having lived in many countries on different continents, the art of this current resident of Dallas brings to our world a rich experience of other cultures and the human experience.
Elisabeth Schalij traveled from the Netherlands to the vibrant art scene in New York City where she received her formal training and education. Her award winning work is noted for its distinctive expressions of nature. From the Rhine, to the Hudson, and now her garden ponds in Texas, Elisabeth draws her inspiration from water and her immediate natural surroundings. Noted for printmaking with mixed media collage and assemblage elements, Elisabeth’s work is delicate, yet bold-- whimsical, yet thought provoking. For some of the works in this show, she presents an interesting architectural grid as the background world for her whimsical creatures. Other works in the exhibition explore her relationship with flora and fauna. Particularly her signature work for the show, Redbirds Rising, a collage painting on canvas, exclaims her relationship to water and nature.
Silvia Thornton is the first American to win the prestigious Jean Urbanek Award in Paris, France from Le Societe International Des Beaux Arts . She was also graced with France’s The Arts, Sciences, & Literature Silver Medal Award. These are just two of the many accolades Silvia has received during her twenty-eight years as an artist living in Dallas. Silvia enjoys using a combination of different skills to bring her works to life, selectively assembling and fusing together various images. She layers colors with printed papers, etchings, and wax, creating a delicate blend into a cohesive whole. For this exhibition, Silvia is presenting her most recent collection of twenty-three encaustic paintings that explore her love of nature and the emotions evoked from places and events. In many respects, her work allows the viewer to contemplate the principles of harmony and balance, as exemplified in her painting, Wax, Wood, and Quills.
