Gaza Zoo, An Exhibition of Forty Prints by Laray Polk

DALLAS, Texas-- Haley-Henman announced the solo exhibition, a reprise of Gaza Zoo by Laray Polk, from November 28, 2007 through January 5, 2008. The show is an abbreviated version of her book by the same title. In 2005, the entire contents of the book were shown as an exhibition at the University of Texas at Dallas. The show at Haley-Henman will be comprised of a selection of forty pages at an enlarged size. The opening reception for the artist will be Friday, November 30 from 6-9pm.

Laray Polk lives in Dallas and is a former faculty member at UTD and North Lake College. Gaza Zoo is a project that allows multiple iterations. In its primary form, it is a book of both text and images. As an exhibition of large prints, the pages become an occasion for the act of public reading.

The content is political, scholastic, and relevant to the issues of our time. Polk draws from a variety of notable thinkers such as Marshall McLuhan, David Ogilvy, and Noam Chomsky. Working in the tradition of collage, Polk digitally assembles text and images, pairing quotes with mainstream media images of war and upheaval in the Middle East. A microsecond of CNN reinterpreted as a static image becomes an opportunity to explore the barrage of messages lost to speed and the 24-hour news cycle.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: This is Haley-Henman's first season. We are interested in providing a gallery space that is conducive for lively interchange among people interested in the arts. We hope to provide not only a visual experience of art but also a forum for dialog.

The Haley-Henman Gallery is located at 2335 Hardwick Street in the Fort Worth Avenue Development District. It is located west of downtown Dallas over the Commerce Street bridge. Hardwick Street runs perpendicular to W. Commerce and the I-30 access road by the main post office.
